Heather Ann De Jong
Instructor, Artist, Designer

Heather Ann DeJong was a creative child who always was drawn to colour and beauty. In her late teens, she took a course at Conestoga College in home decorating. She learned that painting parties were a popular social event for many. Heather Ann attended a Decorative Painters convention and mingled with some well-known artists, who recommended she begin teaching painting events. She found a great resource, Deco Art Canada, a social artworking program for teaching in groups.

When Heather Ann offered her first painting party, she was amazed at the response. People were very receptive and excited about signing up for a class and meeting new people. She started a Facebook page for Brushstrokes in Motion and invited all of her friends to like the page. Heather Ann has a booth at the Made in Huron Artisan Markets shop in Clinton, where she sells products such as her paints, brushes, and patterns. She has held classes there in the shop, as well as at the Legion and a few other locations. She also does custom paintings and her own creative paintings when she has the time. Being in business for yourself is challenging at times. Heather said that she sometimes struggles with time management… she has a difficult time staying on track. An entrepreneur needs to learn to balance home life and business. In her job, working hours are often evenings and weekends, which may mean missing out on family gatherings. However, the satisfaction of doing what you love means that you learn to prioritize. Some beginning business owners might fear going from a steady income to not knowing what the income will be. Heather’s advice? “Do what you love and the money will come!” She is certainly doing that!

From a young age, I have been an enthusiastic crafter. Thanks to the teachings and encouragement of my mother. She taught me that crafting was not only fun but very rewarding. You have  never truly experienced crafting until you have worked with teasel?

Mari-jo McKay
Wreath Design, Glass Painting & Decorative Painting

My love for decorative painting began in the ‘80s through my employment in the craft industry. During this time I was introduced to basic brushstrokes, decorative painting, tole painting, colour theory, stenciling, and faux finishes. While taking a hobbyist design course I discovered floral design and wreath making.  I really enjoy working with deco mesh and poly burlap.

Over the years I continued with decorative painting for which, I developed a passion. I enjoy the one-stroke style of painting by Donna Dewberry, which includes glass painting.

In the past, I have offered and taught classes in knitting, crotchet, basic brush strokes, fabric painting and applique decorative painting,  floral design, paper tole, and cement stepping stones. In the near future, I will be offering courses in the one-stroke style of glass painting and wreath making. There is nothing more enjoyable than sharing my skills and watching others catch the creative "spark".
